I want to send you a section from Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, attached, which I re-read this evening (while looking at stills of the stunningly feminine Jean Seberg in Breathless). From p. 32-3, "The appearance of an abiding substance or gendered self ... is thus produced by the regulation of attributes along culturally established lines of coherence.
